Erasmus MC looking for plasma donors who have already had corona

Erasmus MC in Rotterdam does a call to men who have been infected with the coronavirus to report. Research is being conducted into a possible drug against the infection caused by the virus. Who is healed could help with that.

“The researchers want to see if a drug can be developed with plasma from the blood of those persons,” health editor Rinke van den Brink said in the NOS Radio 1 News. “Plasma is a yellowish liquid that contains a lot of proteins. If you have had an infection, there are antibodies in your blood, in that plasma.”

Erasmus MC is looking for these antibodies, because they may serve as a medicine. Recent research by Erasmus MC shows that monkeys with antibodies eliminate the virus. The Rotterdam medical center also reports that other Chinese research showed that monkeys are not infected if they have already had the virus. “It could also work for people and they want to see that now,” says Van den Brink.

Requirements

Not everyone can participate in the study: you have to meet various conditions. For example, you must be a man over the age of eighteen and a laboratory test must have established that you have had corona. Furthermore, you should never have received blood or plasma transfusions, and you must have had a fever of at least 38 degrees for at least two days during the infection.

Only men can participate in the study, because there is a greater risk of side effects with plasma from female donors. These side effects are rare, but serious, says internist infectiologist Bart Rijnders in the appeal of Erasmus MC. “It is not entirely clear why that is, but it is therefore the standard in the Netherlands to only use plasma from male donors.”

You can register by sending an email to [email protected]. If you meet all the conditions, an appointment will be made for the purchase of plasma. The appointment is at Erasmus MC and lasts approximately two hours in total.
