East Java Newsroom-Recently, the world was shocked by the flurona issue originating from Israel. Flurona is a co-infection of the influenza virus and the SARS-CoV-2 virus (Covid-19). Reportedly, this virus was first identified in pregnant Israeli women who have not been vaccinated.

Lecturer of the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Airlangga (Unair) Laura Navika Yamani, gave her views regarding this matter. According to Laura, the issue has continuity with several recent symptoms.

The rise of people exposed to the Covid-19 virus has made all citizens of the country and even the world more vigilant. Thus, the emergence of multiple infections or coinfection in the human body raises a hotly discussed issue.

“Actually, there is no need to be burdened with the circulating issues. Everything is still full of estimates. In addition, the symptoms of COVID-19 and influenza have similarities. It is very likely that this is just public panic in responding to all possibilities,” he said, Tuesday (18/1/2022).

According to him, the influenza virus contained in the new variant of flurona is one of the viruses that commonly occurs in some humans, especially the Indonesian people. It’s just that some countries that have four seasons will feel “unusual” when they have influenza.

“This case is different from the Indonesian people, flu has become a disease that usually occurs when the rainy season arrives. Therefore, there is still no further examination related to the flu that coincides with COVID-19,” he added.

Seasonal differences in some countries could be one of the reasons for the coinfection. The reason is, flurona has similarities with Covid-19 in its transmission, namely through droplets when an infected person breathes, talks, coughs or sneezes. However, the difference is that influenza is a disease that can occur through airborne transmission and when the seasons change.

This is in the spotlight because people rarely suffer from influenza (especially residents in countries with four alternate seasons). Even in some countries there are special vaccines to control the disease, in order to minimize similar symptoms.

Laura herself said that it was difficult for influenza to arrive in Indonesia. Because the influenza virus (flu) has indeed become a congenital disease that is often considered “normal”. Even if there were, it would be considered COVID-19 only, or just influenza.

“Why is that? because the two have so much in common that one assumes that one will only get hit by one of them. For example, the symptom of covid-19 is that there is a mild flu in it, so how can the two be said to be different?” he insisted.

Laura added, that the comparison of the dangers of the flurona and corona will be more or less the same, depending on how the individual will cope with the situation.

“If you want to keep Indonesia away from the flurona issue, of course you have to obey whatever matters are conveyed during the restrictions, for example 3M (maintaining distance, wearing masks, and washing hands). In addition, there must also be a healthy lifestyle by each individual, “he concluded. (mad/hjr)
