EPIDEMIA – Deaths due to coronavirus epidemic worldwide are already more than 4,000

The global number of patients killed by the new coronavirus epidemic exceeded 4,000 on Tuesday, according to AFP figures, after China reported another 17 fatalities in its territory.

With the new death toll in China, the total number of fatalities amounted to 4,011 due to the epidemic that has already spread through 100 countries and recorded more than 110,000 confirmed cases of contamination.

The epidemic has disrupted the global aviation market and forced the cancellation of all kinds of sporting events, with travel restrictions affecting tens of millions of people.

In China, where the epidemic was initially identified last December, new cases have steadily declined in recent weeks, in a sign that unprecedented blocking measures appear to be working.

On Tuesday, China reported only 19 new cases confirmed the lowest number since the government began counting infections on January 21, according to the National Health Commission.

All new infections occurred in the epicenter of the virus, the central city of Wuhan, with the exception of two imported cases brought from abroad.

This means that there were no local cases of infection in the rest of the country.

The 17 new deaths occurred in Hubei province, and with it the number of victims in mainland China rose to 3,136.

More than 80,750 people have been infected in China, a picture that motivated the adoption of unprecedented measures to try to control the spread of the virus.

However, fears increase that as the cases of the disease multiply abroad, China’s progress could be affected by infections returning to the country from abroad.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said Monday that more than 70% of people infected with the new coronavirus in China have recovered, adding that the country was “controlling its epidemic.”

Therefore, there were signs in recent days that some of the measures to restrict movement and the gathering of people could be lifted, with some regions reopening schools or announcing dates to resume classes.

Most of the 16 improvised hospitals opened in Wuhan have already been closed, and the last two are expected to close on Tuesday.
