The Diocese of Aachen awarded the Krefeld Maria Montessori Comprehensive School as part of the project “Cool down and survive – so that our earth can still breathe tomorrow” for special commitment to climate protection. The award comes with prize money of 1000 euros.
“I once saw a report that showed what our earth might look like if no people lived here,” explains 15-year-old Anna-Sophie Gutmann. “For me, that was the moment I decided that I wanted to do something for the environment. Because there is only one creation.” Together with classmate Amelie Schöller, teacher Christina Schmidt and headmistress Gabriele Vogt, Anna-Sophie has now received an award from the Aachen Diocese.

The diocese had already launched the competition in the 2019/2020 school year. “The idea of the competition was for schools to start actively reflecting and considering where they too can influence emissions,” explains Marie Goebel, climate and environmental protection officer for the Diocese of Aachen.

And the students at the comprehensive school took this to heart. Shortly before the competition was announced, an environmental working group had already been founded on a student initiative. With the prize money from the competition as additional motivation, the students worked with their teacher Christina Schmidt on ideas and suggestions for environmental protection at school. “For us as an AG, it’s all about creating awareness for our own consumption,” explains 17-year-old Amelie.
