- After the 3-0 away win in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16, Basel is no stranger at home.
- FCB is inefficient in a playful and combative performance against Eintracht Frankfurt, but still wins 1-0.
- Shakhtar Donetsk is waiting in the quarter-finals, Schalke will play on August 11th.
- So the other games of the Europa League Thursday went.
At the latest when Eintracht keeper Kevin Trapp sent the ball unmotivated to a Basel player in the 84th minute, it was clear: These Frankfurt no longer believe in the miracle of making up for the 0-3 mortgage from the first leg. Just a few seconds later, Basel’s Samuele Campo missed closing the sack when he went alone on Trapp.
You can watch the quarter-final between Basel and Shakhtar Donetsk live on SRF on August 11th at 9 p.m.
If spectators had been admitted to St. Jakob-Park, they would not only have celebrated Basel’s entry into the quarter-finals of the Europa League. They would also have witnessed a 0: 0 of the better kind. However, only up to the 88th minute: Then Fabian Frei ensured a «red-blue» victory. After a nice combination, he also left Trapp and pushed into the empty housing.
The home side presented themselves defensively disciplined and in the game structure with pleasant combinations. Frankfurt found no solution and disappointed across the board.
No «second Valencia»
Basel never seemed to run the risk of experiencing a “second Valencia” during the entire 90 minutes: In 2014, FCB, at that time under Murat Yakin, gave a 0: 3 from the first leg and were 0: 5 at the Estadio Mestalla inferior to inferior.
Already in halftime 1 Basel was closer to a goal: Above all the striking Silvan Widmer failed twice (16./25.), Also Arthur Cabral sinned (22.). 4 minutes after the change of sides, it was once again full-back Widmer who alone lost to Trapp.
So it took up to 88 minutes before Frei redeemed the Basler. The FCB’s journey continues. It takes him to Schalke, where the quarter-final against Shakhtar Donetsk is on the program on August 11th.
