Entire region: From November 26th: Management plan for FFH areas Kandelwald, Rosskopf and Zartener Becken is available – Freiburg regional council would like to preserve biological diversity in the fauna-flora-habitat area

From the jackdaw crab in Ibenbach near Buchenbach to the ciliated bat in the attic of Freiburg’s Friedrich-Gymnasium to the stag beetle in the Gundelfingen Forest: the biological diversity in the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Area (FFH) “Kandelwald, Rosskopf and Zartener Becken” in Freiburg and above the gates of the city is great. In order to preserve and develop these natural treasures, the Regional Council of Freiburg (RP) has drawn up a management plan that has now been completed and will be published on November 26th.

The approximately 2,200 hectare FFH protected area “Kandelwald, Rosskopf and Zartener Becken” is one of the 212 FFH areas in Baden-Württemberg which, together with the bird protection areas, are part of the European Natura 2000 network. It extends over the cities of Freiburg and Waldkirch as well as the communities Glottertal, Gundelfingen, Kirchzarten and other communities.

In order to implement the management plan, the district offices, cities and municipalities, owners and managers are now called upon to contribute to the protection and preservation of native animal and plant species and to secure their habitats. The management plan contains proposals for the rivers and for the management and maintenance of areas. In streams with very rare jackdaws and stone crabs, for example, the introduction of crayfish plague must be prevented through preventive measures. For example, the staff of the building yards should be trained accordingly for maintenance measures at the waterfront. To keep meadows and pastures open, young trees should be pushed back. The continuation of the near-natural forest management should secure the existence of the habitat types in the forest.

An inspection is also possible at the specialist authorities in the district offices of Emmendingen, Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and the city of Freiburg as well as at the regional council during normal opening times after registering by telephone.

Background information on Natura 2000:
In Baden-Württemberg there are a total of 212 FFH areas, which, together with the bird protection areas, are part of the European Natura 2000 network. The regional council prepares a nature conservation plan for each of the 59 FFH areas in the Freiburg administrative region. This so-called management plan goes through an advisory board as well as a public display. So far, 50 management plans have been completed and published in the Freiburg administrative district, nine are still being processed.
