The French driver suffered injuries to his legs that even forced him to undergo surgery, from which he is already recovering, with “the process of repatriation to France” underway.
The organization of the Dakar all-terrain rally, whose 44th edition began this Saturday in Jeddah, decided to reinforce the safety of the caravan, after a vehicle explosion injured French driver Phillipe Boutron before the start.
Boutron was in a vehicle with five other Sodicars team members when the vehicle came to a sudden stop due to an explosion in the vicinity of the Donatello Hotel in Jeddah.
“The origin of it is still unknown, but no possibility is ruled out, including a malicious act,” the organization said in a statement.
Therefore, “as a precautionary measure”, the Amaury Sport Organization (ASO) decided to “increase security” in the hotels and the race camp.
