England will go into lockdown for four weeks from Thursday

The prime minister listed some exceptions:

  • for education,
  • to go to work, for those who cannot work at home,
  • for outdoor exercise,
  • for medical reasons,
  • for food and other essential purchases,
  • to take care of someone else.

Non-essential shops, pubs, bars and restaurants have to close again. Home delivery and collection services remain possible.

“We will get through this, but we need to act now to contain the rise in infections,” said Johnson. “We are not going back to the severe lockdown of March and April. The new measures are not going as far. But from Thursday the same message will apply: stay at home, protect our NHS health service and save lives.”
