England Sets Record for Deaths in One Day Due to Omicron

London

English reported the highest number of deaths in a day due to corona virus (COVID-19) in the region. This record was recorded when the government of the Prime Minister (PM) Boris Johnson is considering easing the Corona restrictions imposed to reduce the spread varian Omicron which is highly contagious.

As reported Reuters, Wednesday (19/1/2022), British authorities reported an additional 438 deaths from Corona in a day, on Tuesday (18/1) local time.

The figure set a record as the highest additional deaths in a day in the UK since 24 February 2021, or almost a year.

Health Minister Sajid Javid told parliament he was optimistic that the coronavirus pandemic measures put in place to reduce the spread of the Omicron variant would be eased starting next week, as the number of cases and hospitalization rates appeared to have peaked.

British media reports said the government was considering gradually lifting remaining coronavirus restrictions, including work from home rules and the use of vaccine passports.

Despite record numbers of Corona transmissions in recent weeks, the rapid rollout of booster injections and the lower severity of the Omicron variant have kept hospitalizations and deaths from rising as sharply as previous Corona waves.

So far, British authorities have recorded a total of 152,513 deaths from Corona on its territory – the seventh-highest total of Corona deaths in the world. Most of the deaths from Corona in the UK occurred in the first year of the Corona pandemic.
