England requires negative covid test to enter the country | Europe up to date | DW

This test, which Scotland also hopes to apply soon, is already required by other countries to contain the covid-19 epidemic.

According to the British Minister of Transport, Grant Shapps, all passengers entering England by plane, train or boat must have a negative test for covid-19, which must be done 72 hours before starting the trip, otherwise they will be obliged to pay a fine of 500 pounds (553 euros).

The people who will be exempt from this regulation will be carriers, children under 11 years of age and crew from countries that do not have the infrastructure to perform these coronavirus tests.

The British Government indicated that it is working with the autonomous authorities of Wales and Northern Ireland to apply this measure, while the Scottish Executive has indicated that it hopes to adopt it as well, although it has pointed out that Scotland already maintains the illegality of making non-essential trips to and from that region.

A few weeks ago, the Government suspended direct flights from South Africa due to the appearance of a new variant of the coronavirus that could be more virulent than that detected last year in the southeast of England.

“We already have significant measures to prevent imported COVID-19 cases, but with new strains appearing internationally, we have to take more precautions,” Shapps said in a statement.

According to the latest official figures, the United Kingdom yesterday registered a total of 1,162 new deaths from covid-19, and the upward trend of recent days continues.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the United Kingdom has registered a total of 78,508 deaths and 2,889,419 infections.

The country has accelerated the vaccination program with Pfizer / BioNTech and Oxford / AstraZeneca preparations and has set the goal of vaccinating the most vulnerable groups -13 million people- by February 15. (EFE).
