England fall into spin vortex; Batting collapse in the first innings against India

Chennai: England’s batting collapsed in the first innings of the second Test against India. Batting first against India’s 329 in the first innings, England were 39 for four at lunch. Rory Burns (0), Dominic Sibley (16), Daniel Lawrence (9) and Joe Root (6) are at the crease. Ben Stokes (8) is the man at the crease. R Ashwin took two wickets for India. Ishant Sharma and Akshar Patel have one wicket each.

England were deceived by the spin vortices at Chepauk Stadium. In the first over, Burns was caught in front of the wicket by Ishant. The remaining three wickets were for spinners. Sliby Ashwin, who was playing well, tried to sweep the ball but was caught by captain Kohli on the leg slip. Next up was Joe Root’s plow in excellent form. Ashwin was caught in the short fine leg when he tried to sweep the ball to Akshar. It was Akshar’s first Test wicket. Ashwin also dismissed Lawrence on the ball just before lunch. Shubhman Gill caught on short leg by Ashwin.

India’s tail was broken

Earlier, India were bowled out for 329 in the first innings. India started the second day at 300 for six, losing the remaining 29 runs. The highlight of the second day was the ball’s half-century. Rishabh remained unbeaten on 58. He hit 58 off 77 balls with three fours and seven sixes. Akshar Patel (5), Ishant Sharma (0), Kuldeep Yadav (0) and Mohammad Siraj (4) were the other wicket-takers for India. Starting the second day, India lost the accessor in the second over. Moin Ali’s ball was stumped by wicketkeeper Ben Fox. Ishant returned with a catch to Rory Burns in the same over. Kuldeep and Siraj were bowled by Ston in the same over.

Rohit-Rahane partnership

Earlier, Rohit Sharma (161) and Ajinkya Rahane (67) put India ahead in the innings. The duo added 162 runs. Apart from Rohit and Rahane, India lost Shubhman Gill (0), Virat Kohli (0), Cheteshwar Pujara (21) and R Ashwin (13) on the first day. Moin Ali took four wickets for England. Ollie Schotton took three wickets and Jack Leach two. Joe Root has one wicket.
