England: ex-goalkeeper Bonetti dies

English football mourns the loss of its former national goalkeeper Peter Bonetti. The keeper, at the 1970 World Cup in the quarterfinals against Germany (2: 3 a.V.) in the goal of the Three Lions, died on Easter Sunday “after a long, serious” illness at the age of 78. His former club Chelsea called Bonetti “one of the greatest players in the club’s history” and expressed “deep sympathy and condolences” to the relatives.

In Germany, Bonetti gained popularity mainly because of the duel at the World Cup in Mexico. At that time, he moved instead of the sick regular keeper Gordon Banks between the posts and conceded a goal at 2: 0 for England even against Franz Beckenbauer (68.), Uwe Seeler (82.) and Gerd Müller (108.). This seventh international was also the last for Bonetti.

At the 1966 World Cup in England, he had also previously been part of the English squad. Because Bonetti was not used at the time, he initially did not receive a gold medal after winning the title of the Three Lions. This was only presented to him in 2009 after a petition from the world association FIFA.
