Nat Sciver-Brunt smashed a record-breaking fifth century in Women’s Cricket ODI World Cups, propelling England to an 89-run victory over Sri Lanka in their latest tournament match. Sciver-Brunt’s innings of 117 anchored England’s total of 253/9 in 50 overs.
The milestone surpasses the previous record of four hundreds held jointly by New Zealand’s Suzie Bates and Englishwomen Charlotte Edwards and Janette Ann Brittin. This was Sciver-Brunt’s 10th ODI century overall. The win marks England’s third victory of the tournament.
England rebuilt their innings around Sciver-Brunt’s captain’s knock, with support from Heather Knight, Sophia Dunkley, and Charlie Dean. Inoka Ranaweera led the Sri Lankan bowling attack with 3 for 33, while Sugandika Kumari and Udeshika Prabodhani each took two wickets.
Sri Lanka’s chase suffered an early setback when captain Chamari Athapaththu was stretchered off the field in the sixth over with a hamstring injury, the score at 18. Hasini Perera attempted to anchor the chase, partnering with Vishmi Gunaratne and Harshitha Samarawickrama.
However, Sophie Ecclestone dominated the middle overs, finishing with figures of 4 for 17. Charlie Dean dismissed Gunaratne, and Ecclestone later removed Perera for 35, Samarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari, and a returning Athapaththu (who later revealed she had suffered a cramp).
Sri Lanka collapsed from 95 for one to 116 for five and were eventually bowled out for 164 in 45.4 overs. Nat Sciver-Brunt also contributed with the ball, taking 2 for 25, alongside Dean’s 2 for 47.
