Endocrine disrupting substances – Reaction Unilever – Radar

Unilever has commented on the Radar broadcast about hormone-disrupting substances in care products.

The safety of our products is a top priority for us. They are used by millions of people worldwide every day, and consumers trust our products to be safe.

The safety standards that we apply with regard to the ingredients of our products are determined by laws and regulations in which safety is well assured, as well as by our own internal safety evaluations, in which safety experts evaluate the exposure to a product for people and the environment.

We take into account the estimated quantity at a time, the duration and regularity of use. And we take into account foreseeable misuse of the product, for example using shower gel to wash hair. By ensuring exposure levels are well below harmful levels, we can be sure that our products are safe for users, our employees and the environment.

When new information becomes available about an ingredient, we evaluate it. If this information changes anything to our previous risk assessment, we will take action. And should a suitable alternative ingredient be available, we will always consider possible substitutions. If we are not absolutely sure about the safety of an ingredient or product, we will not market the product.

You will find more information about our approach to ingredient safety here on our website. And of course you can find more about this subject on the websites of the Dutch Cosmetics Association and the RIVM.

The findings of the Anti-Poison Foundation make it clear that they have checked the ingredient list on the packaging of five of our products. The indicated ingredients are therefore in the permitted / safe concentrations in the product as assessed by the independent Scientific Committee for Consumer Safety of the European Commission. These are substances that are used in personal care products for efficacy or for preservation in low concentrations, to ensure that products can be used safely for a longer period of time.

We never compromise when it comes to the safety of our products; we do not market products unless we have solid scientific evidence that they are completely safe for everyday use.
