End of tornado alert in Gatineau and Ottawa

GATINEAU | Tornado alerts issued in eastern Ontario and surrounding Gatineau and Ottawa on Monday afternoon were lifted in the early evening.

Despite everything, these regions remained under the influence of a tornado watch, since the weather conditions remained “conducive to the formation of violent thunderstorms which could produce tornadoes”, warned Environment Canada in the middle of the day.

Environment Canada first sounded the alert after detecting a line of thunderstorms about 7 kilometers long stretching from Pakenham to Garretton, west of Ottawa. This storm, which was heading towards the federal capital, had the capacity to generate “destructive winds, large hail and intense rain in places”, as well as a tornado, had detailed the federal organization.

In addition, meteorologists were tracking, at 4:34 pm, a “severe thunderstorm that could produce a tornado” near Newmanville, about 70 km south of Ottawa, which was heading northeast at 70 km / h. “Weather observers have reported a funnel cloud and a possible tornado,” Environment Canada explained.

Signs of rotations in these depressions had been observed by Environment Canada, hence the interest in generating tornado alerts.

These alerts finally fell gradually around 5:30 p.m.

Internet users and tornado hunters posted several photos and videos to social media showing funnel clouds and even a possible tornado in Oxford Mills, Ont., But the damage appeared, at first glance, to be limited.

Earlier in the afternoon, a severe thunderstorm appeared to have damaged Camden East, about 30 kilometers west of Kingston, Ontario. Internet users have notably shared photos of trees torn up by the force of the winds.

“There is no certainty that there were tornadoes, but there is damage in Camden East and we could see a spinning motion on the radar,” commented Peter Kimbell, meteorologist at Environment Canada, according to comments reported by the “Ottawa Citizen”.

Thunderstorm watch

In addition, Environment Canada also issued the alert for a severe thunderstorm watch for several sectors of Quebec, including the greater metropolitan area of Montreal and Laval.

The Laurentians, Lanaudière, Montérégie and the Outaouais were also affected by this storm watch.

Several regions of eastern Ontario were targeted in the afternoon by a severe thunderstorm warning that could produce “very strong gusts and heavy rain”. This alert changed to a violent thunderstorm watch in the early evening.

Earlier Sunday, the city of Toronto also tasted Mother Nature’s mood swings. The Queen City received up to 70mm of rain in places over the past 12 hours, which even prompted the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to issue a brief warning of possible flooding Sunday afternoon on the Don River. , which runs through Toronto, reported the CP24 channel.
