Employment, quality of life: The most attractive cities in France are …

France’s GDP is expected to decline by around 10% this year. This means that the current recession is already three times greater than the 2008-2009 crisis. Consequences: France recorded 638,000 net job losses in the private sector in the first half of 2020.

The capital is not immune to the crisis: employment fell by 4.1% in the first half of the year, a steeper drop than the French average (62,000 fewer jobs in just six months). What can accelerate the mobility of Ile-de-France residents to the regions?

According to the 6th edition of the Arthur Loyd barometer, the large regional metropolises are doing well. They account for 80% of the increase in jobs in France over the past 10 years, while they only represent 10% of the territory.

“Over the past 20 years, regional metropolises have attracted populations, and in particular graduates, have invested heavily in infrastructure, have transformed and become tertiarized. They therefore have the assets to enable them to capture future growth, and constitute tomorrow the spearhead of the French economic recovery ”, explains Cevan Torossian, director of Arthur Loyd’s Studies & Research department.

The regions, a new El Dorado for start-ups

Local authorities have made significant efforts to welcome innovative businesses and support them in their growth, by offering incubators, accelerators, mentoring and loans. They were also able to offer competitive costs (rents, local taxes) which made them attractive.

2019 thus marks a historic reversal: for the first time, the regions recorded an increase of + 26% in fundraising by start-ups, against only + 7% in Ile-de-France.

Is entrepreneurship in the regions the right vein?“Growing an innovative idea in the region without going through the“ Paris box ”is in any case a major development in France in recent years! Metropolises are fully benefiting from the digitization of the economy. And labeling such as French Tech is the result of proactive public actions which have increased the vitality of regional ecosystems and changed the outlook of investors ”, specifies Cevan Torossian.
