Employment insurance benefits: “worrying” delays

The MPs for Berthier-Maskinongé and Trois-Rivières, Yves Perron and René Villemure are concerned about the delays affecting employment insurance benefits for citizens targeted by a fraud alert and are demanding that this verification process be reviewed.

The two MPs met with the Mouvement Action-Chômage Trois-Rivières to discuss the matter. “We are asking that Employment Canada carry out these verifications simultaneously with the granting of employment insurance benefits. Thus, the vast majority of irreproachable citizens will not be penalized unnecessarily, maintains René Villemure, MP for Trois-Rivières. Once the verification is complete, Employment Canada may hold the offending claimants to account. Until the government proceeds with the necessary comprehensive reform of employment insurance that we have been calling for for a long time, this is the right thing to do. »

“In addition to taking honest claimants hostage, Employment Canada asks them, to prioritize their file, to prove that they are no longer able to pay their bills. This is simply unacceptable and insensitive. The solution we are proposing could save a lot of headaches and we will ensure that the government implements it quickly,” adds. Mr Perron.

Mr. Villemure and Mr. Perron indicate that requests for help have exploded in their constituency office, while one in three cases is currently fraud. Calls are also increasing at the Mouvement Action-Chômage Trois-Rivières .

Everyone complains that citizens no longer know who to turn to after waiting for hours on the phone to finally be told that someone will call them back later. Many citizens are waiting for their employment insurance benefits and have no follow-up on their files. Citizens have a double fear, since they do not know what is happening with their files and do not have access to their benefits.

People experiencing unreasonable delays are invited to contact the office of René Villemure or Yves Perron to find out about the progress of their case.
