Employees plan to change jobs and develop skills

The Covid-19 pandemic represents such an abrupt change in the job market that it moved many professionals out of their comfort zone. Some employees were unemployed, but others decided to change jobs last year and for this year the trend continues.

Despite the global economy experiencing the loss of the equivalent of 255 million full-time employees in 2020; A study conducted by the IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV), established that 1 in 4 employees plans to change employers in 2021.

Reasons to change jobs

The reasons why employees voluntarily changed jobs in 2020 were:

  • 32% needed more flexibility in time or workplace
  • 22% needed more benefits and support for their well-being
  • 20% said they did not have good prospects for career advancement or job security

The trend will continue in 2021, according to the study, as professionals seek a salary increase or promotion (41%); have a more purposeful or meaningful job (32%) or access more benefits and support for their well-being (29%).

Employees consider they have the skills for the 2021 job

Despite the fact that for a long time companies recognized that it was difficult to find the talent for their vacancies; Today 87% of employees believe they have the necessary skills to meet job employment goals in 2021.

Despite this confidence, most employees continue to plan measures to enhance their skills for the future.

For example, 62% of those surveyed by IBM in Mexico said they planned to take online education courses this year.

While 38% of the country’s respondents indicated that their 2021 skills upgrade or improvement targets included enrollment in a formal degree, certification or accreditation program.

Finally, according to the study, 33% plan to join a professional association in their field of interest, and the same number want to take continuing education courses in face-to-face mode.

SkillsBuild, free learning platform

In that context, IBM launched SkillsBuild, a free online learning platform designed to train job applicants.

Students accessing the platform can perform a self-assessment of their job interests and skills, which helps them identify and connect with a learning journey that is tailored to their abilities.

The learning paths and credentials (badges) they can earn cover areas such as cybersecurity, data analytics, customer service, professional skills, and job application essentials, among others. Some of IBM’s content partners include Fortinet and Red Hat.
