Emirates News Agency – The continuous modernization of Dubai Electricity operations contributes to reducing carbon emissions

  • DEWA's continuous modernization of operations contributes to reducing carbon emissions

DUBAI, 30th January / WAM / DEWA’s modernization of three gas turbines in station “E”, the first phase of the authority’s Jebel Ali power generation and water desalination plants complex, contributed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 65,930 tons per year, and reducing emissions of oxides Nitrogen is 77.3% for these turbines, equivalent to the reduction achieved by the most modern gas turbines on the market.
His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, said: “We are working to achieve the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, “may God protect him,” for Dubai to become a role model at the global level. The world is in the efficiency, reliability and availability of electricity and water, and we also support the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Carbon Neutral Strategy 2050 for the Emirate of Dubai to provide 100% of energy production capacity from clean energy sources by the year 2050. We are keen to develop and implement programs and projects to consolidate the emirate’s leadership in the provision of infrastructure Developed according to the highest international standards, to serve the goals of sustainable development, and support the process of building a sustainable green economy in the United Arab Emirates.
He added: “The authority’s application of the latest technologies of the industrial revolution and disruptive technologies, including artificial intelligence, drones and other innovative technologies, in addition to redesigning processes and engineering, solar energy production techniques and clean water desalination, has improved energy production efficiency, which has achieved savings.” Huge money.”
For his part, Eng. Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President – Production Sector at DEWA, confirmed that DEWA is keen, after installing any gas turbine, to continue communicating with the original equipment manufacturers, regarding updates and new and cost-effective technologies, throughout the life cycle. Turbines, which contributes to increasing capacity, enhancing efficiency and reliability, in addition to extending the life of these turbines.

He added that these efforts culminated in extending the life of the turbines by 15 years by adopting the concept of repair and reuse to reduce the consumption of natural resources, in line with the UAE’s circular economy policy.
It is noteworthy that the authority broke its world record in the maintenance period (Major Inspection Outage), which it recorded in 2019, as it succeeded in completing the maintenance of the main inspection operations within only 9 working days, compared to the previous number of the authority (11 working days), which constitutes a reduction in the maintenance period by 18. % compared to the previous figure registered in the name of the Authority and 84% compared to the situation in 2006.

This achievement resulted in the availability of gas turbines reaching 99.51% and 99.83% for gas turbines of the (E-Class) and (F-Class) classes, respectively, in the summer season, and these percentages are among the best in the world.

DEWA also maintained its world record in completing the maintenance of desalination units in only 10 working days, compared to 21 days previously, and the availability of F-Class gas turbines increased, which contributed to achieving financial savings of 3.55 million dirhams for each major inspection. In addition to providing electricity and water services according to the highest standards of availability, efficiency and reliability, this step contributes to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 49,329 tons per year, in addition to reducing operating and maintenance expenses.
