Embassy of the DR in Costa Rica commemorates the anniversary of National Independence

The Dominican embassy in Costa Rica commemorated the 177th anniversary of National Independence with a series of activities, which included a wreath at the San José National Monument, with the presence of the ambassadors of the Central American Integration System (Sica), the coordinating ambassador of Grulac and the embassy officials.

From February 20 to 27, a full week of activities commemorating the Independence of the Dominican Republic was held, a historic feat that began on February 27, 1844.

Ambassador Mayerlyn Cordero Díaz explained that the celebrations for the commemorative week of the 177th anniversary of National Independence were held virtually, due to restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cordero Díaz considered that the best way to commemorate National Independence would be by highlighting the most important events of that historical feat, the life of the Fathers of the Nation and paying tribute to the women of February who with their actions were an important part of that event.

The homage to the homeland was accompanied by a space dedicated to highlighting Dominicanness in Costa Rica, “the men and women who every day raise the name of the Dominican Republic,” in the ambassador’s own words.

On this occasion the filmmaker Leimy de la Rosa, the painter Beatriz Paulino and the artist and hairdresser Luis Manuel Marmolejos (Luigi) told their stories, experiences and contributions in the land that welcomed them.

This program also highlighted Dominican cuisine in an activity starring chef Génesis Rosario and his wife Gaby Vargas, making a simile between Dominican and Costa Rican food.
