For the first time in 10 years, the Palace is officially rewriting the role of Queen Elizabeth II.

For several months, Queen Elizabeth II has reduced her public appearances. If she remains head of state and head of the nation, the monarch now sees her workload officially reduced. On July 2, the Sunday Telegraph has, in effect, reported that the duties that Prince Charles’ mother “must fulfill”, have been removed from the annual report on the Sovereign Grant published last week. The Palace has thus officially rewritten the role of the queen.

A first for 10 years

According to the report, the Queen should travel less. Buckingham Palace has also replaced the appointment of ministers with a new role which “encompasses a range of parliamentary and diplomatic functions”. The commitments of Elizabeth II have also been replaced by a broader program of “visits within the framework of royal programs”. A charge for which the monarch will have the support of her family. The palace clarified that “The Queen is greatly assisted by other members of the Royal Family who carry out official duties on behalf of Her Majesty. »

The reduced workload takes into account Queen Elizabeth II’s health and mobility issues. During her platinum jubilee last June, the monarch stressed that she would continue to serve her country, but that she would do so with the support of her family. Some members of the monarchy have, in fact, replaced her during royal events. During the Trooping the Color and Royal Ascot ceremony, her son, Prince Charles had thus represented his mother.

The Queen, however, retains her role as Head of State and Commonwealth as well as Head of the Armies. The report thus divides her functions into two: “The role of Head of State, which is a formal constitutional concept, common to all nations and which implies the official functions which the Queen, by constitutional convention, must perform. Before adding: “The role of head of the nation, a much more symbolic role in the life of the nation, involving functions which are not directed by the constitution but which the Queen performs when appropriate or necessary. For now, Buckingham Palace has not commented on these changes.

Still, the Queen took part in a series of events at Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, Scotland, last week, joined by her son Edward and his wife Sophie of Wessex.
