Electronic cigarettes can cause erectile dysfunction, suggests an American study – ČT24 – Czech Television

Researchers from New York’s Grossman School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine published the results of extensive researchwho addressed this phenomenon. The work suggests that men aged 20 to 65 without previous cardiovascular disease who smoked electronic cigarettes were almost two and a half times more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction than those who had never used electronic cigarettes.

According to researchers, e-cigarette use appears to be associated with erectile dysfunction, regardless of age and other common risk factors.

“Because many people use e-cigarettes to quit smoking traditional cigarettes or choose them as a safer and healthier alternative, we need to examine the relationship between them and erectile dysfunction to identify the potential consequences for men’s sexual health. It’s even clearer now that more studies need to be done to show if e-cigarettes are really safer, “said Omar El Shahawa, who led the research.

“Our analyzes have taken into account participants’ smoking history, including those who have never smoked, so it is possible that daily vapors of e-cigarettes may be associated with a higher probability of erectile dysfunction regardless of the smoking history,” he adds.

How the study went

The researchers used data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (PATH), a nationwide representative study of 45,971 American adults aged 18 and over that examined various tobacco use patterns and health outcomes.

The authors limited this specific research “only” to 13,711 men over the age of twenty. On this fairly large and representative sample, medical statistics experts examined whether there was a link between e-smoking and erectile dysfunction.

Importantly, the research took into account a lot of different risk factors, so the researchers tried to rule out all sorts of random connections. About half of the participants smoked in the past, a fifth used cigarettes at the time of data collection and 14 percent used other tobacco products.

Compared to those who have never used e-cigarettes, everyday users were more than twice as likely to have erectile dysfunction. Among respondents aged 20 to 65 with a normal body mass index, the researchers found a significant correlation – meaning that the problem does not only affect people with some major health problems, but occurs in a relatively healthy population.

The researchers managed to find another important connection: the probability of erectile dysfunctions decreased significantly in men who engaged in more frequent and intense physical activity.

There is no clear evidence, research will continue

The authors emphasize that this research suggests a strong link between e-cigarette smoking and erectile dysfunction, but it is not yet evidence that it is a causal link – that e-cigarettes lead to dysfunctions. Their work had several limitations: the researchers themselves reported their problems, so the results could be skewed.

So there is a lack of clear evidence to support their claims – such as medical records that they use erectile dysfunction drugs.

This is what research should continue in the coming years; The current study confirms that the connection is so significant that it makes sense to address the phenomenon further. Of course, there is also the possibility that men with erectile dysfunctions are so stressed that they reduce it with smoking – for example, electronic cigarettes.

In the next phase of research, according to El Shahawy, researchers should pay attention to whether some e-cigarettes have a stronger link to disorders than others. Because this study only looks at men, future research should also look at the link between e-cigarette use and sexual dysfunction in women.
