Electronic Arts reports another major event

In an extremely hectic week for the world, Electronic Arts announced that it would delay its EA Play Live event. The move comes amid large-scale civil unrest in the United States.

EA is now joining several major developers and studios who are delaying the development of their products, while respecting the nation’s current state. EA’s official Twitter account had this to say.

EA moved its event, in the interest of making “important voices” heard. The company obviously respects the protests and the Black Lives Matter movement. Postponing their event seems to be a thoughtful and timely decision.

CEO of Electronic Arts addresses employees

In addition to the announcement of EA Play Live, CEO Andrew Wilson shared a letter with all EA employees. In the note, he details what the company has done exactly to improve the situation in the country.

To start with, EA has pledged over a million dollars Equal Justice Initiative and the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund. This shows the company’s commitment to these causes. Besides the donation (which is placed in the context of EA’s annual profits, is almost nothing), EA has also taken steps to involve its employees in socially beneficial work.

Game studios and developers have hosted their own presentations and streams to announce their releases. This trend started a few years ago, when companies effectively abandoned conventions like E3, in favor of more controlled and personal presentations.

With E3 canceled for the year, events like EA Play Live are the only places where new ads can gain traction.

One of the biggest games rumored to be released was Madden. The new NBA Live was also slated to be announced, as well as new content for their existing IP addresses.

Holding their event during the civil unrest would certainly be in bad taste. Not only would EA lose a large audience, but it would also offend minorities and the Black Lives Matter movement in general.

The company postponed the event for a week exactly from the original date. If all goes well, we won’t have to see a monumental change in EA’s release schedule for the summer.
