Electricity consumption jumped in Ukraine

Now 14 out of 15 NPP units are in operation

Electricity consumption is increasing due to the cold snap. The Ministry of Energy assured that there is a reserve of capacities.

Due to the cold snap, electricity consumption in Ukraine increased by 1 GW – up to 22.5 GW, Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko said on Tuesday, December 21.

“With this consumption, today we actually have a significant reserve of capacity in the energy system to provide an appropriate amount of electricity,” he said.

In particular, nuclear generation, currently operating in 14 units out of 15, has a reserve of about 600 MW.

The minister also noted an increase in coal reserves in December, since six ships with about 400 thousand tons of energy coal have arrived in the country since the end of November, and four more ships with almost 300 thousand tons are expected to arrive by the end of the month. Coal consumption is expected to be lower than supplies – 1.8 million tons versus 2 million tons.

Let us remind you that last week two ships with coal for DTEK arrived in Ukraine from Colombia and the USA. For three months, 455 thousand tons of coal were imported. In total, over 1 million tons of imported coal have been contracted for a stable passage of the heating season.

Note that only 6 out of 23 units are operating at state-owned thermal power plants due to a lack of coal.
