Elderly woman set forest fire in Carregal do Sal and was caught fleeing

A 70-year-old woman was arrested in flagrante delicto by the GNR of Carregal do Sal for the crime of forest fire in the same municipality.

The GNR military detained the suspect shortly after starting the fire and preparing to flee the scene.

The woman was caught during a policing action in an area where other fires had already started.

When she was arrested this Thursday morning, the woman still had the objects she used to light the flames. “I was in possession of matches,” specified Fábio Lamelas, public relations officer at GNR in Viseu.

The woman, a resident of Carregal do Sal, ended up confessing that she started the fire, but did not indicate the motivation. An defendant was constituted and awaits the outcome of the case referred to the Santa Comba Dão Court.

The investigation is in charge of the Judiciary Police. The action was supported by the Santa Comba Dão Environmental Protection Center.
