El Salvador will apply third dose of vaccine against COVID-19

At a time when there is an increase in infections and deaths, Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele announced that a third dose of the coronavirus vaccine will be applied to personnel facing the pandemic on the front line.

Bukele said on Twitter that, “taking into account the success of the third dose in Israel, we have decided to start with a third dose in El Salvador.”

He explained that the individuals who may receive a third dose are health personnel, teachers of the public and private system, personnel of the armed forces, police, firefighters, Civil Protection personnel and employees of drugstores, pharmacies and laboratories.

In addition, it will apply to people with morbidities and to all adults over 60 years of age.

“You can make your appointments for the third dose starting this Sunday, here: http://vacunacioncovid19.gob.sv,” said Bukele.

He confirmed that the vaccination of children over 6 years of age is still enabled and for all age groups that attend the 162 inoculation points throughout the country, in the three self-services or in the Metacenter of the new Hospital El Salvador in the capital.

In recent days, an increase in infections has been confirmed in the country. After having records of less than 100 cases a day, there are now more than 300 new cases and more than ten deaths a day. The report states that, of the 13,879 active cases, 99 people are in critical condition and 432 are serious.

The alpha, gamma, delta and lambda variants already circulate in El Salvador, which further complicates the situation.

The Minister of Public Health, Francisco Alabí, reported that Hospital El Salvador, where only COVID-19 patients are treated, has exceeded 600 patients with this disease.

So far the Central American country has registered 102,024 infections and 3,164 deaths. A total of 84,981 people have recovered.

In El Salvador, the smallest nation in Latin America and with a population of 6.7 million, the Public Health authorities plan to immunize more than five million people.

The country has received 11,920,490 doses in 36 shipments. Since February 17, when the application began, the first dose has been delivered to 3.8 million people. Three million individuals have already received the second dose.

In El Salvador, vaccines from AstraZeneca, Sinovac, Pfizer, Moderna and Sinopharm are being applied.
