Eight die, two critical as hot-air balloon catches fire and crashes

Balloon Fire Tragedy Claims Lives in Brazil

A hot air balloon ride over Brazil’s scenic coast transformed into a nightmare when flames erupted, resulting in multiple fatalities and leaving a community in shock. The incident occurred near a popular tourist destination, raising serious questions about safety protocols.

Catastrophic Mid-Air Blaze

The accident unfolded around 8 a.m. local time in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, Brazil. A balloon carrying 22 individuals caught fire mid-flight, leading to a devastating crash in a rural area close to the Atlantic coast. Officials are investigating what caused the blaze.

“Rescue crews found eight people dead and two survivors; the search continues for the rest of those aboard. What looked like a peaceful ride quickly turned into tragedy,”

Jorginho Mello, Santa Catarina Governor

The fire began in the balloon’s basket, per reports from the scene. Recent data shows that hot air balloon accidents, while rare, often result in severe injury or death, with an average of 1.4 fatalities per 1,000 flights in the United States (National Transportation Safety Board).

Grim Details Emerge

Ulisses Gabriel, chief of Santa Catarina’s civil police force, shared the heartbreaking scene: “Three people died hugging each other. It hurts the soul.” Thirteen individuals managed to escape by jumping. However, eight could not escape the fiery disaster.

Disturbing footage of the incident has circulated on social media, capturing the balloon inflating, taking off, then erupting in flames. The basket dropped swiftly, as captured by multiple witnesses. Local hospitals are treating the thirteen survivors.
