Egypt News | Egypt News / “Maternal and Fetal Health” is an initiative to screen for HIV / AIDS, syphilis and HIV in pregnant women

Within the framework of the state’s concern for the health of citizens and raising the level of attention to it, the Ministry of Health and Population launched an initiative for “Pregnant Women’s Health” in health units and centers within the framework of a project called “Maternal and Fetal Health”, which includes free and rapid analysis of HIV / AIDS. And syphilis and hepatitis B virus.

Manal Mohamed, Director General of Motherhood and Childhood at the Health Directorate in Cairo, says that the Mother and Fetal Health Project is responsible for following up mothers and children in units, health centers, and maternal and child care units.

“Manal” explained that the analysis consists of three rapid reagents for AIDS, syphilis and virus B, and that these diseases can be transmitted from the mother to the fetus if it is confirmed that she is infected. She adds: “Syphilis can infect the child during childbirth and have complications like it affects the eye.” Noting that the hepatitis B virus is very likely to be transmitted to the child during pregnancy through the placenta, pointing out that these tests can be performed by any woman as soon as pregnancy occurs and there is no specific month required for her to undergo it.

And she continues: “It is not only the mother and the fetus who will benefit from this initiative, but the father is also because if the mother has AIDS or syphilis, we will also do a test for the husband because these diseases are transmitted through sexual relations and thus he will receive treatment faster.”

Ahmed Nabil, a doctor in the Egyptian Fellowship of Family Medicine in Aswan, says that the Ministry of Health has paid great attention to these three diseases, specifically, as they are the most affecting the mother and the fetus, during pregnancy and their need for special care during pregnancy and after childbirth if the results of the tests are positive for the mother.

“Nabil” points out that women who want to undergo the analysis must go to the nearest health unit or center and show their identity card to examine it and find out whether it is one of the target groups that did not perform the analysis, or has previously conducted it. He explains: “The result of the analysis looks forward within a quarter of an hour because it is Quick reagents, and we are not satisfied with them if it comes out positive, but it will be followed by a number of other tests and a referral to a hospital to deal with the case. “

He adds: “The main goal of this initiative and campaign is to protect the mother and the fetus, and therefore the hospital in which the injured woman will be born is determined, the nursery in which the baby will take part, and how to deal with him after childbirth in order to avoid the occurrence of problems and complications that may lead to his death.”
