Egypt invites Musk after tweet about pyramids built by ‘aliens’

Egypt has invited American businessman Elon Musk to visit its ancient monuments, after the founder of Tesla and SpaceX published a satirical tweet attributing the construction of the pyramids to “aliens”.

“The pyramids were obviously built by aliens,” the eccentric billionaire recently wrote, picking up on a theme popular among conspirators.

The tweet sparked an avalanche of reactions ranging from mockery to outrage among netizens, with some Egyptian nationalists asking Mr Musk to further verify the facts.

Egyptian Minister of Investment and International Cooperation, Rania al-Mashat, saw it as an opportunity to promote tourism in her country.

“I follow your work with great admiration. I invite you and Space-X to explore the writings on how the pyramids were built and also to visit the tombs of the builders of the pyramids. We are waiting for you, Mr. Musk! », Underlined the minister, inviting him to visit in person the last of the ancient seven wonders of the world still standing.

Mr Musk then posted a link to a BBC article tracing the history of the workforce behind the construction of these towering buildings, calling it a “good summary”.

The pyramids of the Giza Plateau (west of Cairo), a flagship site for Egyptian tourism, reopened to the public in July, after three months of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tourism, a heavyweight in the Egyptian economy, has long been dying after years of political instability following the 2011 uprising that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak.

For this crucial sector, which since 2017 has recorded a gradual return of foreign visitors to the banks of the Nile and the Red Sea, the COVID-19 epidemic has marked another blow.
