Hanover (dpa / lni) – In the opinion of the Verdi union, educators in day care centers urgently need better working conditions – the Corona crisis has made this clear again. “Corona acts like a magnifying glass on the conditions in day-care centers,” said the union secretary Katja Wingelewski. In particular, a lack of well-trained staff makes day-care centers difficult. “The facilities have to be crisis-proof, this requires better equipment with sufficient educational specialists.”
The crisis showed how important daycare centers are for society. However, many new challenges have arisen for the carers, such as adhering to the corona hygiene plans, said Wingelewski. “Comforting a child a meter and a half away is quite difficult.” The care in smaller groups, however, did the children good. Wingelewski criticized the regulation of the Ministry of Culture, according to which kindergartens may also hire non-specialist staff for a limited period during the corona crisis if educators are absent due to corona. She demanded that investments should not only be made in expanding the daycare center, but also in the quality of care.
In an appeal to the state government in the summer, daycare workers complained: “The conditions under which we work make people sick and do not meet the educational requirements and demands.” Around 15,000 people supported the appeal. On Wednesday evening, minister of education Grant Hendrik presented a ton of paper rolls with thousands of signatures.
The SPD politician also answered questions from the participants in the online rally. The daycare centers are run down, said an educator who has been in the profession for 40 years. In the past 20 years, new tasks have constantly been added. In order to give all girls and boys good educational opportunities, more money and more staff are necessary. Another participant asked for remuneration during the training.
