EDP forced to divert lines and compensate residents in Braga

EDP was sentenced to 15 thousand euros in compensation to each of the three complaining residents and to divert the electric power lines from above the houses, in the area of the so-called Sete Fontes subdivision, in Braga, Newspaper (JN).

The decision of the Administrative Court of Braga, confirmed by the Central do Porto last year, proved that the high voltage lines emitted a noise – of the humming type – that did not leave the residents alone, not letting them sleep at night. “Even today, there are three people with sleep disorders and others,” says lawyer José Carvalho Araújo.

The judicial decision also takes into account the damage caused in terms of the value of the houses, which depreciated due to the fact that the power cables were only meters from the roofs.

EDP guaranteed that it will follow up on what was ordered by the Court, proceeding with the payment of damages to the three complaining couples.

“With regard to the request to withdraw lines, compliance with the execution of the sentence does not depend exclusively on actions by EDP Distribuição, and work has already started to study and analyze from a technical point of view the works to be developed”, adds EDP , who will have to find land to place the poles and obtain municipal licensing.

The electric company also stresses that “it has maintained contact with the plaintiff’s lawyer, having already received the necessary data to comply with the payment, a situation which it will follow up with shortly”.

In turn, the lawyer accuses EDP of having resorted to “delaying maneuvers” to delay the execution of the sentence: “They lost twice and still appealed to the Supreme Court, where the appeal was not even admitted. Now, they are saying that they pay, they asked in June for bank details to make the transfer, but they did nothing ”.

The residents, adds the lawyer, want EDP to also remove the electrical cables, so that the noise problem no longer disturbs them.

“If EDP does not comply, in September I ask the Court to execute the sentence”, he concludes.
