Édouard Geffray Named Minister of National Education in Government Reshuffle
PARIS – Édouard Geffray, 47, was appointed Minister of National Education on Sunday, October 12, 2025, succeeding Élisabeth borne, who held the position for nearly ten months. geffray is a veteran of the Ministry, having served in various key roles over the past decade.
Prior to his appointment as minister, Geffray was the second-highest ranking official within the Ministry of National Education. He previously served as director of the short-lived cabinet of François Bayrou at the Ministry of Justice in 2017. He then transitioned to education, joining Jean-Michel Blanquer as general director of HR at the ministry.
Geffray’s longest tenure within the ministry was as director of school education,a position he held from 2019 to 2024.He continued to serve as a key advisor under subsequent ministers including Pap Ndiaye and Gabriel Attal, maintaining the confidence of Blanquer’s successors.
A graduate of the École Nationale d’Administration (ENA) and a State Councilor, Geffray is known for his deep understanding of the issues facing the French education system. He played a central role in managing the Ministry’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
While generally considered center-right, geffray has maintained a consistent dialog with unions, despite overseeing the implementation of reforms-including those related to high school, the baccalaureate, and level grouping-that have drawn union criticism. He also collaborated with the armed forces to develop defense education conventions, a shared interest with Prime Minister Lecornu.
