ECOWAS wants decision by 15 February in Guinea-Bissau

ECOWAS urged Guinean justice to take a decision on the ongoing electoral dispute in Guinea-Bissau by 15 February. The decision was announced by Ivorian Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, chairman of the regional bloc’s commission, on Sunday night, February 9, at the end of an extraordinary summit of the West African group in Addis Ababa, at the headquarters of the African Union.

The closed-door meeting of ECOWAS statesmen was attended by representatives of the 15 member states, including the lCape Verdean speakers (represented by the head of state, Jorge Carlos Fonseca), and, the main interested party, Guinea-Bissau, who was represented by the prime minister, Aristides Gomes.

The forum lasted three hours and gave second to the chairman of the regional organization’s committee, heard on the spot by the rfi, for in-depth discussions.

This emphasized the importance of the issue for Guinea-Bissau, but also for the region.

At a time when the Supreme Court of Justice is examining a new appeal by the PAIGC candidate, Domingos Simões Pereira, after the national election commission reiterated last Tuesday the victory of the opposition candidate, Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

Jean-Claude Kassi Brou stressed the need for political normalization in Guinea-Bissau and to guarantee peace and stability.

ECOWAS has asked the Guinea-Bissau Supreme Court of Justice to examine the appeal, in accordance with constitutional requirements, and that the respective decision be communicated by 15 February 2020 at the latest.

This decision aims to guarantee the political and institutional normalization of Guinea-Bissau, stressed the former Ivorian economist, putting an end to the ongoing litigation.
