Eating Noodles Stored for 1 Year, 9 Family Members Died

Gao Fei, director of food safety at the Heilongjiang Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the poison due to bongkrekic acid is extremely fatal.

He explained that the poison had infected a few hours after that, during which the sufferer could experience stomach pain and sweating.

“The poison can cause serious damage to human organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart and brain,” Gao told China News Service.

Gao explained that currently, there is no antidote for tamarind. Once exposed, he put the death rate at between 40-100 percent.

He explained that the tamarind, which is produced from fermented coconuts, is even resistant when heated in high temperatures.

Bongkrekwhich is usually used as raw material for tempe bongkrek, is banned in Indonesia because it is responsible for many deaths.

Between 1951 and 1975, every year in Indonesia there were recorded 288 cases of poisoning and 34 victims died from tempe bongkrek.
