Stress, anxiety or the hectic pace of our lives leads us to turn our backs on the pleasure of eating and eating with ease.

We don’t even have time to eat. We invest so many hours at work, in the obligations of daily life or in caring for our children that, sometimes, we give up something basic: mealtime. In many cases, this time is reduced to only ten minutes. “An outrage,” says Dr. Antonio Villarino.
Food is our source of energy. Without it, we can forget about everything else. But stress, anxiety or the hectic pace of our lives, especially from Monday to Friday, leads us to turn our backs on the pleasure of eating and eating in peace.
Instead, we choose to nibble on something quick, take out the container in front of the computer screen while we work, have a snack on the bus or in the car, or even on the street when we walk.
EFEsalud has spoken with Dr. Villarino, president of the Spanish Society of Dietetics and Food Sciences (Sedca), who thus explains why rushing is bad when eating food.
- Eating takes time, stopping is counterproductive: “Food is an act that takes time. The food has to be chewed well to bring it crushed into the stomach. When it gets there, the enzymes attack it, and if they do it fast and running, they don’t work well, they’re uncomfortable. “
- The rapidity produces gastric discomfort: “The process of ingestion-digestion-absorption must be carried out in a slow and orderly manner. If we alter the rate of intake, we will have stomach problems ”.
- We let a lot of time pass between meals: “When we can do it, we have such low glycemic levels and so hungry that we would eat anything”; Villarino believes that working hours in Spain sometimes force food to be delayed until after normal time.
- Awareness: Dr. Villarino regrets that some people “have lowered their arms and given up,” that a large part of the population has thrown in the towel. And it highlights the awareness of others trying to change their bad eating habits.
- Eating is not a pleasure, it is an obligation: “If we do not change this concept, we will not learn the importance of eating calmly and enjoying meals.”
A balanced and varied diet and enough time to enjoy it and assimilate it will improve our nutrition. Let’s include these recommendations in our lifestyle habits.
