Earth’s population is heading for a catastrophic 2.4-degree rise in temperature by the end of the century

The concentration of carbon dioxide on the planet has risen to a new high – 148% above pre-industrial levels.

Earth’s temperature in 2020 reached a record high in 3 million years. Countries’ current commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are insufficient to prevent a climate catastrophe. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said this at the international conference Petersberg Climate Dialogue. Online organization on Thursday 6 May.

“Last year was another unprecedented period of extreme weather and climate disasters,” he said.

According to Guterres, “this is the highest level in 3 million years, when the temperature of the Earth was 3 degrees higher and the sea level was about 15 meters higher.”

“Last year was already 1.2 degrees hotter than preindustrial times – dangerously close to the 1.5 degree limit set by the scientific community. We are still heading for a catastrophic 2.4 degrees temperature rise by the end of the century. we are really standing on the edge of the abyss, “he stressed.

The UN Secretary General noted that the current commitments of countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are not enough to prevent a climate catastrophe.

“But if we work together, we can prevent the worst impacts of climate disruption and use the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic to put us on a cleaner, greener path,” Guterres added.

Earlier, the UN said that it needed Global Zero Carbon Coalition… National governments must already take action to prevent further climate change and adapt to existing changes.

It was also reported that 2020 became the hottest year in Europe for 150 years. Temperatures on the continent have been elevated at all seasons.
