Earth Just Survived 2021 GW4 Asteroid Collision

NEW YORK Asteroid small as the size of a new pickup truck seen to endanger the Earth this morning (12 April).

Astronomers calculated the asteroid, dubbed GW4 2021, has a diameter of about 14 feet (4 meters) – too small to survive its journey through Earth’s atmosphere if it ever collided with our planet, according to NASA. As reported by Space, Asteroid which was only seen on April 12, flew near Earth and nearly crashed, even though it doesn’t harm the planet astronomically.

Called 2021 GW4, astronomers previously calculated the asteroid about 4 meters in diameter was too small to survive its journey through the atmosphere if it collided with Earth.

NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies claims to have identified more than 500 asteroids this year through the program.

Asterod GW4 2021 was first seen on April 8 by astronomers at Mt. The Lemmon Survey, which is part of a high-powered asteroid discovery project called the Catalina Sky Survey, has identified more than 500 asteroids this year, according to NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies.

To date, NASA has identified more than 25,500 near-Earth asteroids, most of which are too small to threaten Earth. Their discovery was only a bonus as scientists carefully searched for larger space rocks.

However, when it flew past at its closest point at 9 a.m. EDT, the asteroid was about 26,200 kilometers from Earth.

This is less than a tenth of the distance between Earth and the Moon, close enough for an asteroid where the average distance between Earth and the Moon is about 384,400 kilometers.

According to NASA’s preliminary calculations of the object’s orbit, its visit is as close as an upcoming asteroid for the next century.
