Earth is at its furthest point from the sun this morning

Makassar, CNN Indonesia

Earth will be at the point furthest from sun this morning, Tuesday (6/7), around 05.27 WIB. This astronomical phenomenon is called Aphelion.

Earth’s closest distance to the sun occurs on January 2, 2021, which is 147,093,163 kilometers (km). This morning the earth will be 152,100,527 km from the sun.

“At that time, the earth will complete half of its journey around the sun,” said Meteorology and Geophysics Observer (PMG) Makassar BMKG expert, Kaharuddin, Tuesday (6/7).

Kaharuddin explained that Aphelion occurs because the earth’s orbit is not completely circular, but elliptical. The distance between the earth and the sun varies by about 3 percent throughout the year.

Every year, said Kaharuddin, the earth will complete one revolution around the sun. Because of its elliptical orbit, the earth will be at its closest or Perihelion and farthest or Aphelion from the sun.

According to Kaharuddin, in this Aphelion state the sun will appear smaller in the sky than other times of the year and at the same time the earth will receive the least radiation from the sun.

“The Aphelion phenomenon does not have a significant impact on the earth. This is something that usually happens during the dry season like today,” he said.

The National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) said that the position of the earth at the farthest point from the sun had no effect on the temperature or heat received by the earth.
