Early voting begins in second round of Texas primaries

Los Angeles, May 16 (EFE).- Early voting for the second round of the Texas primaries on May 24 began this Monday and will run until the end of the week.

The second round summons the voters to define the candidates of each party that failed to obtain more than 50% of the votes in the first round last March.

The two candidates with the most votes in the contest on March 1 will contest the second round, in which the winner will be their party’s nominee for the elections in November.

There are several key races in the second round, including the one that will define the Republican candidate for attorney general of the state of Texas, in which incumbent Ken Paxton faces George P. Bush again.

On the Democratic side, Representative Henry Cuéllar is fighting for the place on the ticket with progressive Jessica Cisneros.

In the elections last March, the candidate with Mexican roots obtained 46.8% of the votes in her contest for District 28 in southern Texas, while Cuéllar, 66 years old and with more than a decade and a half in the US Congress, received 48.5%.

In a message in Spanish on his Twitter account, Cisneros encouraged voters to participate in early voting.

Democrats Rochelle Garza and Joe Jaworski are seeking the party’s nomination for state attorney.

In the race for lieutenant governor, Michelle Beckley is facing Mike Collier in the Democratic Party.

Democrats also need a comptroller candidate and will choose between Janet T. Dudding and Angel Luis Vega.
