€ 5 million for Covid-19 treatment and stockpiling

Today, 11 August, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the allocation of EUR 2.94 million to the health sector to cover the costs of diagnostics and treatment of Covid-19 to date, as well as EUR 2.05 million to provide medical supplies to medical institutions. reports the Ministry of Health (MoE).

A number of measures were introduced in the healthcare sector this spring to ensure the epidemiological safety of the population and to reduce barriers to access to healthcare for patients infected with Covid-19. Therefore, it was determined that for patients with Covid-19 and patients suspected of being infected with the disease, the patient’s co-payment is reimbursed from the state budget. This reduced the risk of infecting other people, as there were no financial barriers for patients to receive the necessary diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. Laboratory tests are also paid if Covid-19 is suspected.

Of the additional EUR 2.94 million allocated:

  • EUR 333,270 for outpatient health care services (reimbursement of patient co-payments, visits by family doctors to patients at home, etc.);
  • 99,352 euros for inpatient health care services (observation at Riga East Clinical University Hospital, compensation of patient co-payments, etc.);
  • EUR 2 513 633 for the organization and performance of laboratory tests (including the tests themselves, the provision of a mobile sampling unit at the patient’s place of residence, the operation of sampling points and a call center, and the purchase of personal protective equipment for medical staff) .

In turn, the government decided to allocate an additional 2,054,926 euros to provide medical supplies to medical institutions during the spread of Covid-19 infection. As a result, hospitals will have access to stocks of medicines for three months’ consumption, thus protecting against unpredictable disruptions in the supply of medicines, reports the Ministry of Health.
