In search of victory, Team Jumbo Visma rider Dylan Groenewegen sent compatriot Fabio Jakobsen straight into the fence in Poland. Jakobsen’s condition is serious, according to the Polish news agency PAP.

– I’m taking it to court. These actions must be removed from cycling. It is a criminal act, writes Patrick Lefevre, sports director of Deceuninck-Quick-Step, on Twitter.

It was in the run-up to what developed into a duel between the Dutch sprint cannons Dylan Groenewegen and Fabio Jakobsen.

The race in Poland is often referred to as the fastest sprint in cycling, and it did not look good when Jakobsen narrowed into the barriers right by the finish line.

Jakobsen appeared on cue near the post, and steered it past the goalie.

“He must be put in jail,” the sports director of Deceuninck-Quick Step said.

The duel triggered several ugly rollovers among the riders involved in the sprint in Katowice after the opening leg from Chorzów, among others Jasper Phillipsen got a solid air ride.

Groenewegen crossed the finish line first, but is now disqualified. According to Velo News, Jakobsen has been declared the winner – with Marc Sarreau (Groupama-FDJ) and Luka Mezgec (Mitchelton-Scott) as the other two on the podium.

The Polish news agency PAP reports, with the riding office as the source, that Fabio Jakobsen is in an artificial coma and his condition is characterized as serious.

The accident happens exactly one year after Bjorg Lambrecht died in the same race. The stage race in Poland lasts until Sunday.

Dylan Groenewegen has not yet commented on the incident, but Team Jumbo-Visma has posted a tweet where they hope that everything is fine with Jakobsen.

The case is being updated.
