Dutch parliament supports search for VVD member Remkes for min…

In the Netherlands, a majority of the House of Representatives has supported the appointment of VVD member Johan Remkes as informateur. The liberal will look for a minority coalition.

VVD’s motion to appoint Remkes was supported by D66, CDA, ChristenUnie, SGP, Volt, JA21, the Van Haga Group and the Den Haan fraternity.

‘Work on a minority government’, said Gert-Jan Segers (ChristenUnie). According to Joost Eerdmans (JA21), a cabinet that does not have a majority in the House of Representatives can be good for a new administrative culture. D66 leader Sigrid Kaag hopes that Remkes will still succeed in forming a majority cabinet.

Pastor not optimistic

On Tuesday, the House debated with informer Mariëtte Hamer about its final report. According to her, a majority coalition cannot be formed at the moment and a minority coalition must be formed that consists of a ‘to be determined combination of VVD, D66 and CDA’.

Hamer did not sound very optimistic about the chances of her liberal successor. According to her, it will become even more complicated under the current circumstances to even form a minority cabinet, she told the MPs.

Veto’s

More than five months after the elections, the formation is deadlocked. VVD leader Mark Rutte repeated that he did not want to enter into negotiations with GroenLinks and PvdA about the formation of a new government. CDA does not like that either. D66 does not want to continue the current coalition of VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie.

A speech by Kaag a day before the debate with implicit criticism of Rutte did not make Remkes’s task any easier. Among other things, Kaag had said, without mentioning his name, about Rutte’s unwillingness to talk about a government with PvdA and GroenLinks: ‘Perhaps I had been too gullible all along. I thought it was serious, working from the content.’
