Dutch House of Representatives wants to allow drawing of popular studies again NOW

The House of Representatives wants colleges and universities to be allowed to re-engage students instead of selecting them, it turned out in the House of Representatives Tuesday.

The draw system was abolished two years ago. The selection system that replaced it has, according to D66, an unfair effect. The party therefore submitted a proposal with the CDA to reverse this.

The two government parties received support from SP, PvdA, GroenLinks, PvdD, DENK, 50PLUS, SGP and PVV.

The Ministry of Education hoped that the right student would be in the right place by abolishing the draw for studies with a limited number of places, the so-called numerus-fixus courses. The selection of students also takes into account previous educational achievements, the student’s personality and motivation.

D66 sees that this leads to “unequal chances of access to the study”, because students who can follow expensive extra lessons are more likely to be admitted. In addition, there are several popular courses that want lottery tickets as an option again.

Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven (Education) will soon be responding to the House’s request. The National Student Union (LSVb) says it sees the will of the Chamber as a “good first step.” “We argue a lot for drawing lots. Decentralized selection seems fairer, but in principle it is only measured here how highly educated your parents are and whether they could afford expensive extra tuition for you,” said a spokesperson.

In the case of a study with a decentralized selection, an educational institution may impose additional requirements on a prospective student. For example, previous study performance or the result of an admission test can play a role in admission.

The Dutch Association of Universities is also in favor of the House of Representatives proposal. The Association does, however, think it is very important that universities are allowed to choose for themselves which selection or drawing method is applied per study.
