Dutch ‘ghost footballer’ finally admits what every …

How would it still be with Bernio Verhagen? The Dutchman who came to be known as the ‘ghost footballer’ after losing four clubs in one year without playing a match. Well, he pleaded guilty to fraud and forgery in a Danish court on Tuesday.

Verhagen had been sued by the Danish first division Viborg FF for posing as a professional footballer, when he was actually not that great a talent. He has to pay his former club 15,000 crowns, more than 2,000 euros. Verhagen was previously sentenced to one year and three months in prison for violence against his girlfriend. Other women also say they have been harassed, cheated or abused by the fake football player.

The story of Verhagen begins in 2019, when Willem II’s youth player left the Dutch amateur club Den Dungen behind for a (professional) adventure in Moldova at Dinamo-Auto. Five months later and without playing a match, Verhagen moved to the respectable South African club Cape Town City.
