On Saturday a new petition “We are not a virus” was launched, the action group is fighting against discrimination against Asians in the Netherlands. Discrimination – and especially silly jokes – has increased considerably since the outbreak of the corona virus in China. From silly memes to hysterical bullying in buses or schools, the line must be drawn somewhere!
The petition Signed more than 20,000 times, the reason for the petition was a number on Radio10. Because radio is already a dead medium anyway, she tried to be funny there and they thought it would be fun to make a satirical song about Chinese and corona virus. Well this completely went down the wrong way.
“Enough is enough,” write initiators Vincent Yeers and Hui-Hui Pan. “Every day we are confronted with so-called” jokes “and statements that are not possible. We are just people too. It is time for us to start the discussion. This affects not only everyone who is Chinese, but also all Dutch people with an Asian background. A disease, a virus, you’re not kidding about that. Would we also laugh if the song were about cancer? “
It is indeed too sad to say that all Asians are immediately shaved together, it would be nice if people were concerned about the virus itself and did not immediately declare the Dutch-Asian community a scapegoat.
