Dusseldorf top athletes honored

Numerous athletes from Düsseldorf have also impressed with outstanding performances in the Corona year 2020 and were awarded by Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller honored, including the professionals and wheelchair aces from Borussia Düsseldorf. The awards of the open classes in the Olympic sports took place in the athletics hall in the arena sports park. It was Borussia’s second honor within seven days, after having been able to register in the Golden Book of the state capital Düsseldorf a week earlier for a triple win.

The record champions’ athletes had won three important titles in the previous year: the professional team won the Champions League, the wheelchair team won the German team and Ricardo Walther won the German singles championship for the first time.

Led by Timo Boll and trainer Danny Heister, Kristian Karlsson and Anton Källberg also personally accepted the honor from Lord Mayor Keller and Stadtsportbund President Peter Schwabe. Walther could not be present due to an obligation at his new club ASV Grünwettersbach, and the wheelchair Bundesliga players Thomas Schmidberger, Sandra Mikolaschek and Valentin Baus, who are currently in action in Tokyo at the Paralympics and are playing for medals in the individual competition, were also missing. The event, which usually takes place in the Jan Wellem Hall of the town hall, has been moved to the larger athletics hall due to the current Corona situation.

In addition to the successful athletes, volunteers from Düsseldorf sports clubs were honored for their services to sport in the state capital, including Borussia’s treasurer Renate Mellin.
