It was in the early 1970s, at the dance hall Au retour du Brésil, that Chantal Dagniaux and Francis Bateman met. In this dance hall, which would later be called the Brasilia, they danced to the slow Adieu Jolie Candy » and have not left each other since. Chantal was then 15 years old, and Francis, 24 years old. Two years later, on July 15, 1972, they joined the mayor of Malo-les-Bains. Saturday, in the same place, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Francis, after graduating as a boilermaker and completing his military service in the French Navy in Brest, worked all over the world as a pipefitter. He then worked as a heating and plumbing engineer until his retirement. Chantal worked for some time at Cakoméa, a food company specializing in vanilla, in Malo-les-Bains. Then she worked as a domestic helper in Belgium.
