When you hear the name Dune, you might think of the movie that hit theaters last year or the strategy games of the 1990s. For the origins of this sci-fi story, we have to go back a little further, to the mid-1960s, when American author Frank Herbert defined the genre with his book Dune. This would later become a popular book series, with all kinds of adaptations.

We’re planning to add another title to the franchise later this year, when Shiro Games releases the strategy game Dune: Spice Wars. Translating a universe of this stature from the books into a game is in itself a big task. In the case of Dune: Spice Wars, there is some extra pressure for the developers, because many fans also have warm memories of the Dune strategy games. In particular, Dune II, which was developed by Westwood Studios, became very popular. It got a partial remake, in the form of Dune 2000. The studio’s last Dune game, Emperor: Battle for Dune, was released in 2001. After that, it went silent for a long time.

That lasted until Shiro Games released a new strategy game late last year announced set in the Dune universe. Perhaps the French team is already feeling the shadow of the previous Dune games a bit over its upcoming strategy game, as the studio is first releasing the game as an Early Access title on Steam. The developers apparently liked that with their previous strategy game, Northgard, which was also released first in Early Access. The same model is used for Wartales, the other game the French studio is currently developing. With Dune: Spice Wars, Shiro Games is aiming for an Early Access phase of approximately nine months, during which it can continue to work on the game while collecting feedback from players. It gives us the opportunity to get acquainted with the game in advance.
