Duh! 4 The Country Is On The Brink Of Famine

JAKARTA, AYOBANDUNG.COM – UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warns of risks starving and food insecurity. At least four countries affected by the conflict are under threat starving, namely Congo, Yemen, Nigeria and South Sudan.

In a note to Security Council members according to the Global Report on the Food Crisis 2020, as well as an analysis of new food security, the UN chief said the four countries were ranked among the world’s biggest food crises. Unfortunately, the funds allocated to help are very low.

“Action is needed now,” said Guterres in the Daily Sabah, Saturday (5/9).

After years of armed conflict and violence, he explained that the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Yemen, northeast Nigeria and South Sudan are again facing the scourge. food insecurity increasing, and potentially starving. Conditions are worsening in a number of conflict-torn countries, including Somalia, Burkina Faso and Afghanistan.

Although situations differ from country to country, civilians are being killed, injured, displaced, livelihoods destroyed, and availability and access to food is disrupted. At the same time, Guterres said, humanitarian operations have been attacked, delayed or obstructed. Food insecurity in conflict-affected countries, it is now exacerbated by natural disasters, economic shocks and a public health crisis, all of which are exacerbated by the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

UN humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock said the economic impact of the pandemic, including lockdowns, border closings and restrictions on movement had a major effect on food security and agricultural productivity. What’s more, extremists are taking the opportunity to eliminate all of that.

“It’s not the virus that causes most of the slaughter. “We need to focus on what really causes the greatest loss of life,” Lowcock said.

Many efforts were made, such as providing personal protective equipment, public information campaigns about viruses, water and sanitation campaigns. However, if doing so comes at the expense of basic humanitarian needs in badly affected places, it is not a reduction in casualties, but an increase in loss of life.

Four countries meet the requirements of a 2018 Security Council resolution, when at risk starving as a result of conflict and food insecurity happened very significantly. According to the secretary-general’s notes, increasing violence in the volatile eastern Congo is driving the level of the disaster food insecurity and starving. The latest analysis shows more than 21 million people are in crisis or level food insecurity acute.

In Yemen, where the international community is mobilizing to prevent starving two years ago, the risks were slowly returning. Increasing conflict and an economic downturn are pushing the Arab world’s poorest country to the brink starving two years ago. Similar conditions, as well as worsening of the main indicators appeared today. A recent survey showed 3.2 million people in government-controlled areas are now highly food insecure. Food prices were 140 percent higher than average before the conflict started in 2015. However, Guterres said only 24 percent of humanitarian needs would be funded by 2020.

In the states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe in northeast Nigeria, he said levels food insecurity and starving an alarming result arises from the actions of extremists affiliated with armed groups. Guterres estimates that more than 10 million people in the three states need humanitarian assistance and protection. However, the UN appeal is only funded 33 percent.

In South Sudan’s Jonglei and Greater Pibor administrative regions, Guterres said the situation deteriorated rapidly in the first half of 2020. This was triggered by increased violence and insecurity.

The fighting was accompanied by widespread attacks on farmland and grazing, as well as looting of livestock and food. It is causing more than 1.4 million people to face crisis or level food insecurity acutely worse. At least 350 thousand children suffer from severe or moderate acute malnutrition.
