Due to the pandemic, films not shown in cinemas are also eligible for the Oscars

To be eligible for the Oscars under normal circumstances, films must be shown in Los Angeles cinemas for at least seven days.

However, cinemas in the second largest city in the United States have been closed since mid-March, and it is unknown when they will reopen.

“Until further notice and only for the 93rd prize, the annual awards also qualify for films that were scheduled to be shown in cinemas but were initially available on commercial streaming platforms,” the academy said in a statement.

In recent years, there has been a heated debate over films made by streaming companies such as Netflix, which have also been nominated for Oscars, including last year’s The Irishman and the 2018 Rome.

In order to qualify for the Oscars, these films were first shown in cinemas for a short time, but then offered on the web.

The academy, considered the highest institution in the Hollywood film industry, insists that its belief that the “magic of cinema” should be enjoyed in cinemas remains “unchanging and steadfast.”

“Nevertheless, the historically tragic Covid-19 pandemic makes it necessary to make these temporary exceptions to the rules for running for our awards,” said David Hubbin, president of the academy, and Don Hudson, senior executive director.

As soon as the cinemas reopen, the academy will set a date from which the changes to the rules will no longer apply and the standard qualification requirements will be reinstated.
